After The Rain

The kids and I went with my mom to visit my grandmother. Along the way, we saw a lot of flooded areas. The water here was almost up to the house. Just below the house you can see the water rushing past (look for the white area). I took this photo on the way to Grandma's.

Behind that house was another house; the water came right up to the house. I took this photo on the way back home. I was hoping to get a better view, but this will have to suffice.

I also took some pictures of the covered bridge in Lynchburg, Ohio.

The bridge was built the year before our house was built.
From what I understand, this is the only covered bridge in Ohio that joins two counties. The Highland county side is paved (over the planks) and the Clinton county side is not paved. The bridge is blocked on both sides, so it is only open to foot traffic now.

WOW! I love that. I can't imagine living where history and old buildings are actually cherished. Here in Houston the motto is Rip 'er down, boys! :-(

I like being able to show the kids things like the bridge, it really helps for teaching them history. I think in pictures and I'm sure it helps them to form images of what they hear and read about, if they have seen something similar.

Damama, there are a couple houses in my neighborhood that have been condemned that I wish they would just "rip down". Two have been torn down since we have lived here. But there are at least two that are not safe to have standing.

I agree with the thinking in images thing. Kids learn so much better when they are exposed to reality rather than just sitting in a classroom being expected to "get" it!

The rip it down thing here goes WAY beyond a safety issue. It's a pure and simple big bucks issue. If it's going to take away some developer's chance of cashing in big time, it's gone. There have been some wonderfully historic buildings torn down to make way for condos and parking garages. One of them was a beautiful OLD hotel built around the turn of the century and still in use up until a few months before a large hospital corporation purchased it for a GAZILLION dollars more than it was worth just so they could build a parking garage that would make them even more! The only way I will now go to that hospital is if it is the ONLY place that could save someone's life! And there are a bunch of others here so... :-P**** on them!!

I know what you mean. The two hospitals here in town are supposed to be consolidating into one. In order to do this, they have purchased a lot of old homes and properties. The new hospital will have a whole new campus. Meanwhile, people were forced out of homes they had lived in for many years. There are some really beautiful old homes that are just sitting there boarded up waiting for the hospitals to figure everything out.
